Grace Newberry

Voice Coach and Founder

Grace Newberry, founder of Grace Notes Music Studio is a classically trained opera singer. She received a Masters of Music in Vocal Performance from The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) and a Bachelors of Music from Oberlin Conservatory. During her graduate studies at CCM, Grace sung the title role in Cendrillon by Massenet and worked closely with William Bolcom in a Cabaret show featuring his works. Grace was a Young Artist with Cincinnati Opera in 2017 and a Studio Artist with The Wolf Trap Opera Company in 2013 and 2015. She has performed many roles during her time as an opera singer. After graduate school she decided to pivot, having always been incredibly fascinated by the technical aspects of singing and the process of finding her own voice, she decided to begin teaching and found that she absolutely loved being a part of that creative process for her students. Grace teaches all genres of voice to all ages from 5-85. She began her journey as a musician singing Jazz and Blues prior to delving into the classical music world. She is passionate about helping guide others to find their voice literally and figuratively. She helps her students build confidence and become the best artists they can be. She believes that the voice is most beautiful when it is stripped of all the ideas and expectations we have put on it. She speaks of the voice as a window into who we truly are and a guide to understanding our own psychology, revealing our hopes and dreams, our strengths and weaknesses, our fears and our most authentic selves.

Course Description

Grace works to uncover each of her students' true voices through building their awareness of tension and release in the body and learning to manage and control the breath which is the voice's power source. She works technically to uncover the voice at its most natural and unencumbered and to discover a power and depth in the voice that often her students never knew was possible. She believes singing should be simple. The path to simplicity can often feel complex and difficult; however, she is here to guide her students to an understanding of their voice that allows their instrument to express in a natural way with the most profound results.
